A packing list provides a detailed inventory of the contents of a shipment and is used by importers, exporters, and freight forwarders to ensure that all necessary items are included in the shipment and that everything is accounted for. Here are some key things you should keep in mind when creating your packing list for your next international shipment:
Be detailed and used clear language: Your packing list should be as detailed as possible. Include information such as the number of items, their size and weight, and any special handling requirements. Use clear and concise language to describe each item on the packing list. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that may be unfamiliar to others.
Group product items together by type or category to make it easier to read and understand.
Include any necessary documentation: If your shipment requires any special documentation, such as a certificate of origin or a bill of lading, make sure to include copies of these documents with your packing list. You may need to include additional supporting documents such as commercial invoice, packing certificate, and export license.
Hazardous materials: If your shipment contains hazardous materials, ensure compliance with international regulations. Clearly identify the hazardous materials and provide the necessary documentation, including safety data sheets and packaging certificates.
Follow local regulations: Some countries may require specific information to be included on the packing list, such as the value of each item or the type of packaging used.
Always Have a Digital Copy Handy
While a physical copy of the packing list is usually required for customs purposes, it is beneficial to have a digital version as well. Digital copies can be shared easily with relevant parties involved in the shipment, such as freight forwarders or customs agents.
